The ageing of the world population will be one of the defining megatrends of this century. These changes will have a profound effect on our cities and the lives of the people who live in them, creating new challenges and also opening up new opportunities.

Cities Alive: Designing for Ageing Communities identifies the specific needs of older people and proposes strategies and actions that cities can take to make communities more age-friendly. The report synthesises these strategies into a vision for the future, showing how communities around the word can achieve this vision and empower their older residents to live happy and fulfilling lives.

The report urges property developers, designers and civic leaders to consider the four central needs of the ageing population when developing a framework for the cities of the future:

  • Autonomy and independence – mobility, both inside and outside of the home, is key to retaining a sense of independence as people get older
  • Health and wellbeing – combining healthcare facilities with transit accessibility improvements to ensure everyone can get medical care when they need it
  • Security and resilience – from coping with extreme weather to dealing with reduced mobility and cognition, certain hazards need special attention to ensure a city environment that is safe for all
  • Social connectedness – to support interdependence, preserve self-esteem, support recognition from the community and offer meaningful interactions

An ageing and increasingly urban population will have major implications for cities around the world. It will change our public services, infrastructure and housing, requiring more inclusive design and new forms of housing and social care.
