Examine the complex relationship between economic activity, growth and emissions

Dr Simon Roberts
Global Research Fund Manager

Examine the complex relationship between economic activity, growth and emissions. Using an evidence-based approach, the 7see model makes projections about the nature of economic activity in the near future. The model identifies how the interlocking parts of our economy use energy, and makes clear how and where employment and wealth are generated.

What does GDP mean?

Politicians, the business community and economic commentators hang on each quarterly release. With emotive descriptors, everyone yearns to get out of a depression and into growth. Contrast this with GDP’s critics who vilify its focus on monetised transactions, saying it ignores unpaid work, activities in the home and nature’s contributions. This publication takes neither position but simply sets out to explain what GDP means.

Using a collection of official UK statistics dating back to 1990 on economic output, infrastructure costs (including their replacement costs), energy use, generation capacity, jobs, population, housing and transportation, the 7see model uncovers how the interlocking parts of our economy use energy, and makes clear how and where employment and wealth are generated. This is vital as policy makers need to understand how a working population affects carbon emissions in detail if transitional policies are to be both effective, sustainable and not damaging to economic growth and employment.
